Pinewood Tournament Report

PINEWOOD FC WIN TWO FINALS IN SUNNY SUMMER TOURNAMENT

More than 700 boys from as far afield as Gosport and Maidenhead enjoyed Pinewood FC's 5-a-side festival at the Pinewood Centre, Old Wokingham Road, Crowthorne, last weekend. The home club was successful in two of the finals.

Lovely warm and sunny weather made the football go with a swing though Saturday's very hot conditions meant a rush for water and cooling drinks. More than 100 teams competed in age groups Under 7 to Under 12, with many teams returning from previous years.

The Under 7s and Under 8s took part in a friendly competition where all players received a medal while all other age groups played through to a final winner.

In keeping with the friendly atmosphere at the club, one under 10 team which had only two players soon found several extra players who volunteered to help out from other teams, and despite never having met before, managed to progress to the quarter finals.

Club chairman Mary Hadden explained that; "While all tournaments are designed to raise funds to keep youth football teams playing through the winter season, Pinewood tries to make it as much fun for as many youngsters as possible. It was great to see a scratch side doing so well as the boys made new friends and helped each other out."

"We think that providing facilities for young people to take part in organised sport is important for their development which is why fund raisers like the tournament are so important, but they couldn't take place without the tremendous voluntary effort by dozens of volunteers who give up their time to manage the car parking, run the barbeque and all the other jobs needed to make the event run smoothly", she added.

The winning U9 Players were  - Jack Ryan, Alex Sharp, Will Sumner, Josh Monkhouse, Tom Lawton, Tim Cato and Jack Boxley. With coaches Scott Sharp and manager Adrian Sumner.

Pinewood were successful in the finals of the Under 9 and Under 11 age groups with other winners coming from California FC, and Maidenhead.

NB: It's been pointed out the the results of the U9 victory were exactly the same as England's victory in the 1966 World Cup (2:2 after normal time and 4:2 after extra time).  An excellent omen for the next month !!  (We wish!)
